What is adultery in the Bible? The Bible is very clear that adultery is sinful. Adultery is when the covenant of marriage is broken by fornication and lust. If you’re married, you must not engage in any sexual relationship with anyone but your spouse, otherwise, that’s adultery.
Adultery is regarded as violating the sacred covenant between husband and wife, harming individuals, families, and communities. However, in Catholic and Anglican traditions, the Seventh Commandment is “You shall not steal.”
The seventh commandment reads, “You shall not commit adultery,” a clear and direct prohibition against infidelity. The Bible records it in Exodus 20:14 and Deuteronomy 5:18, both part of the Ten Commandments.
Sexual Immorality in the Bible. In the Bible, sexual immorality is strongly condemned. In the Old Testament, laws were given to the Israelites designed to discourage sexual immorality. These laws prohibited adultery and other forms of sexual misconduct, such as incest and rape.

There’s a third way we break the Seventh Commandment by committing adultery, and that is adultery by thought. Jesus didn’t come to cancel the law; He came to enhance it. Let’s look at what Jesus said about adultery in Matthew 5:27–28.
