Borland ported the Delphi(Pascal) VCL to C++ it had a problem. Delphi has built in string data types, PChar, and Long String being the two we are interested in. PChar, is, (guess what), a char pointer, and Long String is a string type limited only by available memory. (Delphi does provide other string types, but they are of no interest to us.)
