The university was founded in 1845 as "Queen's College, Galway". It was known as "University College, Galway" (UCG) ( Irish: Coláiste na hOllscoile, Gaillimh) from 1908 to 1997 and as "National University of Ireland Galway" (NUI Galway) ( Irish: Ollscoil na hÉireann Gaillimh; OÉ Gaillimh) from 1997 to 2022.
The University of Galway – Ollscoil na Gaillimhe was founded in 1845 as Queens College, Galway. It then became a constituent college of the National University of Ireland and changed its name to University College, Galway.
