He was raised by a single mother who worked as a local switchboard operator, a history Wittliff drew upon when writing the screenplay for the 1981 film Raggedy Man.
We have missed interviewing such brilliant people as William D. Wittliff (who died in 2019) and Roger Payne (who died the same month as McCarthy). What nice interviews those might have been. I loved the interview with Dennis McCarthy.
