The thesis film is the crowning achievement of a Fellow’s two-year tenure at the AFI Conservatory and showcases the mastery of filmmaking achieved by Fellows. Thesis production is a rigorous nine-month collaborative process that culminates in the production of a 20-minute film.
A call for change. In the early 1970s, led by luminaries including Jane Fonda and Shirley MacLaine, the Women for Equality in Media stormed the gates of the AFI Conservatory’s home at Greystone Mansion to protest the lack of gender diversity among its Fellows – and in the creative community at large.
AFI Conservatory’s Department of Innovative Programs brings the AFI’s non-degree, short-term and social impact programs under one roof and creates a space where technologists, innovators, storytellers, entrepreneurs and social justice changemakers, among others, can come together to collaborate, create and impact our industry and culture.

Austin Reynolds is a graduate of the AFI Conservatory. His thesis script “From New York to Florida” landed on the 2012 Black List, and he spent three years as a feature staff writer for Walt Disney Studios, developing and writing live-action theatrical scripts directly for the studio.
