Max Steiner grew up and was educated in Vienna. His paternal grandfather, Maximilian Steiner (1830-1880), for whom he was named, owned a famous operetta theater. His father, Gabor, was an impresario and inventor who built Vienna’s great Ferris wheel, the Riesenrad, that still stands in the city’s Prater amusement park.
