Marikina (/ m ər ɪ ˈ k ɪ n ə /), officially the City of Marikina (Filipino: Lungsod ng Marikina), is a 1st class highly urbanized city in the National Capital Region of the Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 456,159 people.
Founded by the Jesuits in 1630, Marikina used to be the provincial capital of the Province of Manila in the late 1800s. It rapidly progressed and was declared a city on December 8, 1996. Currently, Marikina is considered one of the wealthiest local government units in the country.
In no time, shoe manufacturing flourished into a multi-million-peso industry, earning for Marikina the moniker, “Shoe Capital of the Philippines”. On 11 June 1901, Marikina was incorporated in the newly created Province of Rizal by Act No. 137 of the Philippine Commission.
