Federico Aguilar Alcuaz was a 20th-century Filipino painter known for his Cubist-inspired paintings. Most often depicting nude women, interiors, still lifes, and landscapes, Alcuaz’s work is characterized by its soft blurred edges coupled with bold lines and shapes.
Federico Aguilar Alcuaz ( Filipino: Federico Alcuaz Aguilar, June 6, 1932 – February 2, 2011) [1] was a Filipino painter who exhibited extensively Internationally and whose work earned him recognition both in the Philippines and abroad. Alcuaz was conferred the title of National Artist for Visual Arts, Painting, Sculpture and Mixed Media in 2009.
For example, Tres Marias (1982; oil on canvas), a painting of three women in formal Filipiniana attire sold for nine times more than expected, and Still Life with Landscape (1979; oil on canvas), five times more than expected at Sotheby’s September 2007 auction in Singapore.
Depicting an idealized triumvirate of young girls, often clad in elaborate Spanish-style gowns, the Tres Marias paintings represent a romantic, softer side to Alcuaz's oeuvre, in comparison to his other strictly modernist still lifes and landscapes.
Aside from his tapestries, Alcuaz has come to be known for his “Tres Marias,” his Manila landscape series, portraits and his abstracts.
