Minnetonka is a fully developed suburban community of more than 53,000 residents located eight miles west of Minneapolis. The city's natural surroundings - including trees, wetlands, prairies and diverse bodies of water - give it a distinct character.
The proud history of Minnetonka begins with its original inhabitants, the Dakota people, followed by the arrival of European settlers who established themselves along Minnehaha Creek in the mid-1800s. In 1956, Minnetonka Township incorporated into a village. Minnetonka officially became a city in 1968.

Our work is guided by the 2021 Natural Resources Master Plan and aligned with the city’s strategic priorities. The division is responsible for: Urban forest management. Natural resource conservation and protection. Wetland enhancement and protection. Enforcement of natural resource ordinances. Public land stewardship.
Forestry staff actively manage trees in city parks, outlots, trails and other public lands. This work includes monitoring, pruning, planting, removal and treatment as needed, based on forestry best practices.
More than 20 percent of the city’s land area is wetlands and lakes, with more than 268 acres of maintained parkland in 50 parks; more than 100 miles of trails; and 1,000 acres of natural public open spaces.
