History. Batesville is the second oldest municipality after the town of Georgetown — and the oldest city — in the state of Arkansas. It was named for the first territorial delegate from Arkansas to the Congress of the United States, James Woodson Bates, who settled in the town. The town has also gone by the names of Napoleon and Poke Bayou.

It’s located about an hour and a half to the northeast of the state’s capital, Little Rock, and is surrounded by much of Arkansas’ most amazing natural beauty, including the Ozark Mountains.

Jun 14, 2024 · When the Civil War began, Batesville was a prosperous mercantile and cultural center for northeastern Arkansas, but when the war was over, the town was destitute, and it took decades for recovery. Even so, Arkansas College and many fine homes were built in the 1870s.
