The Shawnee brothers Tecumseh, a highly respected Indian leader, and Tenskwatawa (originally named Lalawethika), a religious visionary, led the most widespread and coordinated Native American resistance against the advancing white settlers and armies in the history of the United States.
Nov 4, 2022 · Tecumseh's brother, Tenskwatawa, was known among the Shawnee as "the Prophet." Together, the brothers founded a pan-Indian alliance and established an encampment known as Prophetstown.
In 1794, nineteen-year-old Tenskwatawa was present at the Battle of Fallen Timbers with two of his brothers, Tecumseh and Sauwauseekau, but he did not distinguish himself as a warrior. Instead, Tenskwatawa viewed the battle as a chance to re-insert himself into tribal society.
Tenskwatawa, also known as Prophet (pictured here), worked with his brother Tecumseh to create a broad-based tribal coalition which would resist American encroachment from the east. In the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, the first white settlers in America inhabited the eastern seaboard.
May 15, 2024 · Tecumseh was reared by an elder sister, Tecumapease, who trained him in the strict Shawnee code of honesty; an elder brother, Cheeseekau, taught him woodcraft and hunting. He was adopted by the Shawnee chief Blackfish and grew to young manhood with several white foster brothers whom Blackfish had captured.
