- 1. (1884–1962), US first lady 1933–45, humanitarian, and diplomat; full name Anna Eleanor Roosevelt. The niece of Theodore Roosevelt, she married Franklin D. Roosevelt (a fifth cousin, once removed) in 1905. Involved in a wide range of liberal causes, she served as chair of the UN Commission on Human Rights, where she helped to draft the Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
