    • 1. (c. 1831–90), Sioux chief; Sioux name Tatanka Iyotake. He led the Sioux in the fight to retain their lands; this resulted in the massacre of Lt. Col. Custer and his men at Little Bighorn. He was killed by reservation police during the Ghost Dance turmoil.
