The University of Santo Tomas (UST; Filipino: Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas), officially the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, Manila or colloquially as USTè (pronounced), is a private, Catholic research university in Manila, Philippines.
King Carlos III. On May 20, 1865, a royal order from Queen Isabella II gave the University the power to direct and supervise all the schools in the Philippines and the Rector of the University became the ex-officio head of the secondary and higher education in the Philippines.
It was founded on April 28, 1611, by the third Archbishop of Manila, Miguel de Benavides, together with Domingo de Nieva and Bernardo de Santa Catalina. It was originally conceived as a school to prepare young men for the priesthood.
UST is owned by a foreign registered corporation (non-profit) with Francisca Bustamante Bayot as the principal Filipino co-owner. The incorporators of University of Santo Tomas in 1906 were most likely four Spaniards, a Filipino and archbishop of Manila. It is difficult to get this information. UST is not paying taxes.
