Pangasinan, officially the Province of Pangasinan (Pangasinan: Luyag/Probinsia na Pangasinan, [paŋɡasiˈnan]; Ilocano: Probinsia ti Pangasinan; Tagalog: Lalawigan ng Pangasinan), is a coastal province in the Philippines located in the Ilocos Region of Luzon. Its capital is Lingayen.
The province is divided into three sections. The western region serves as the ancestral land of the Sambal community, giving rise to a unique mother tongue known as Bino-bolinao, spoken particularly in the towns of Bolinao and Anda. The central and eastern parts are dominated by Pangasinan speakers.
The vernacular “panag-asin-an” or Pangasinan means “where salt is made.” The province is known for its abundant natural resources and bountiful harvests both from its vast landscape and seemingly endless seas, as well as various traditional industries and colorful culture and history.
Pangasinan is a province in the Ilocos Region (Region I) of the Philippines. It has a population of 3,163,190 (2020 Census figures) distributed over 4 cities and 44 municipalities. The provincial capital is the Municipality of Lingayen.
In 1580, Pangasinan was established as an alcaldia mayor or province by Governor General Gonzalo Ronquillo de Peñalosa, and Don Pedro Manrique became its first alcalde mayor. The superior government officially defined the territorial boundaries of Pangasinan in 1611.
