    • 1. (1811–96), US novelist; full name Harriet Elizabeth Beecher Stowe. She won fame with her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), which strengthened the contemporary abolitionist cause with its descriptions of the sufferings caused by slavery. She was the sister of Catherine Beecher and Henry Ward Beecher.
