"Canon divergence" means that the events of canon occur more or less word for word up until a certain moment, at which point the author diverges from canon events and starts writing their own thing. "AU" as a term has no definite meaning.

Canon divergence feels like something that could have happened in canon but didn’t. AU feels like something canon wouldn’t have done but the author is into it and into the characters so they’re rolling with it (nothing wrong with that!)
