Jul 5, 2024 · Between 2006 and 2020, over 1,200 media professionals lost their lives in the same way. In nine out of ten cases, the killers go unpunished. In many countries investigating corruption, trafficking, human rights violations, and political or environmental issues puts journalists’ lives at risk.
UN Human Rights works to promote and protect the right to freedom of opinion and expression. This includes media freedom, and other rights of journalists and media workers, as well as the right to conscientious objection to military service.
Canada actively raises concerns about violations of freedom of expression, including freedom of the media, in bilateral and multilateral meetings. These forums include UN General Assembly, the UN Human Rights Council, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, and other international gatherings.
We support local efforts to defend freedom of expression and to promote the emergence of alternative media in countries where traditional media is restricted. And we assist embattled journalists, including those who investigate corruption and abuses of power.
