Fans of emo pop/pop punk wanted something different than top 40 pop music, but Top 40 was what they were used to so they still needed something with the same sensibilities. Adult fans of the genres either embrace this or deny it.

From what I have read online, most midwest emo songs are played on FACGCE guitar tuning.

Don't worry about making music that is "emo" as much as making music that is interesting to you and following your ears. If it's emo great, maybe you'll make something new entirely.
