Thumbelina, also called Tiny Thumbelina, is a fairy tale written by H. C. Andersen. This is a story about a small girl and her adventures with marriage-minded toads, cockhafers and moles. It was first published in 1835, but when this magical story was written remains a mystery.
Summary. A delightful little girl named Thumbelina, who is no bigger than a thumb, is stolen by an ugly old toad to become her son's bride. With the help of some sympathetic wildlife, Thumbelina makes her escape, only to be captured by a mayfly.
Plot. A woman yearning for a child asks a witch for advice, and is presented with barley which she is told to go home and plant (in the first English translation of 1847 by Mary Howitt, the tale opens with a beggar woman giving a peasant's wife a barleycorn in exchange for food).
