John Patrick Byrne (6 January 1940 – 30 November 2023) was a Scottish playwright, screenwriter, artist and designer. He wrote The Slab Boys Trilogy, plays which explore working-class life in Scotland, and the TV dramas Tutti Frutti and Your Cheatin' Heart.

Byrne was born in Paisley and studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1958 to 1963. He worked as an artist, playwright and theatre designer. Byrne used a variety of styles and techniques as he always tried to avoid being associated with particular styles or movements in art.
Becoming a renowned painter and playwright, Byrne was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 2004 and became a full Member in 2007 and with it Byrne’s nail in the Academy’s wall became a little sturdier.
