Apr 13, 2017 · Robert William Taylor discovered computing while a graduate student in 1957 when he paid his first visit to The University of Texas computer center to process his thesis data. Taylor was dismayed to find that computers of the day were focused on arithmetic and business data processing.
Robert Taylor provided visionary leadership in the creation and development of computer networking. In 1966 he succeeded Ivan Sutherland as Director of the Information Processing Techniques Office of the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA).

Throughout his career, Bob Taylor ran some of the most important projects in the development of networking and personal computing. After working as an engineer for several aircraft and defense companies, he joined NASA’s Office of Advanced Research and Technology as a project manager in 1962.
