David hurls a stone from his sling with all his might and hits Goliath in the center of his forehead: Goliath falls on his face to the ground, and David then cuts off his head. Traditionally, David had been portrayed after his victory, triumphant over the slain Goliath.
King David shows mercy to his traitors, especially Absalom, because he wishes to quell emotions and court the graces of all his subjects. By this reading, David appears to be a pragmatist—one who acts not out of his or her ideals, but on the basis of what is practical or expedient.
Having famously killed the Philistine giant Goliath, David was an aide at the court of Saul until the monarch’s jealousy forced David into outlawry. After Saul’s death, David became king of Judah, in the south, while Saul’s eldest surviving son, Ishbosheth, was made king of northern Israel.
