In the United States and the United Kingdom, he is best known as one of the leading British general officers in the American War of Independence.

Charles the 5th eventually bought his son an Ensign’s commission in the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards, activating Cornwallis’s military career. Cornwallis began his military career in earnest during the Seven Years’ War, transferring to the 12th Regiment of Foot and serving in Germany for three years.
Between 1791 and 1792 he was predominantly engaged in fighting against Tipu Sultan, ruler of Mysore. Tipu was defeated at Seringapatam in 1792 and forced to accept peace terms. In the same year, Cornwallis was created a Marquess. Cornwallis returned to Britain in 1793.
