Attila ( ⫽ əˈtɪlə ⫽ ə-TIL-ə [3] or ⫽ ˈætɪlə ⫽ AT-il-ə; [4] fl. c. 406–453 ), frequently called Attila the Hun, was the ruler of the Huns from 434 until his death, in early 453. He was also the leader of an empire consisting of Huns, Ostrogoths, Alans, and Bulgars, among others, in Central and Eastern Europe .
He was one of the greatest of the barbarian rulers who assailed the Roman Empire, invading the southern Balkan provinces and Greece and then Gaul and Italy. In legend, he appears under the name Etzel in the Nibelungenlied and under the name Atli in Icelandic sagas.
