Jaiku was a Finnish microblogging social network similar to Twitter. It allowed users to post short messages, or “jaikus”, sharing their thoughts and opinions on all kinds of subjects. You could make the posts private, thus sharing them just with your friends, or public and visible to all users.

Mar 13, 2009 · Today is a special day: Jaiku is now being served from Google App Engine. That's the first step in Google making Jaiku freely available as a federated, open source microblogging platform. Although Google will no longer actively develop the Jaiku codebase, the platform will live on as JaikuEngine in the hands of the open source community.
