Howard University School of Law (Howard Law or HUSL) is the law school of Howard University, a private, federally chartered historically black research university in Washington, D.C. It is one of the oldest law schools in the country and the oldest historically black law school in the United States.
You will interact with world-renowned practitioners and some of today’s foremost legal scholars while gaining the skills to further make the legal system more accessible for all. Howard is a national law school that embraces diversity and inclusiveness.

Howard University School of Law started as Howard University Law Department on January 6, 1869 under the leadership of Professor John Mercer Langston. In 1870, Langston was appointed dean. The department opened with six students, and increased to twenty-two by the close of the session on June 30, 1869.
Academics. Section Menu. Professor Mariela Olivares serves as the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the Howard University School of Law. The Office of Academic Affairs is primarily responsible for the internal administration and operation of the School of Law’s program of legal education.
