In 2021, Miami-Dade County received a challenge grant offer from the Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center to fast start an extreme heat initiative under the Resilient305 program. This grant led to the creation of the world’s first Chief Heat Officer (CHO) position.
In 2021, the mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava, appointed Jane Gilbert MPA 1994 to the job. “The role of chief heat officer addresses the increasing health and economic impacts of rising temperatures,” Gilbert says.
Jane Gilbert is the first person to hold the title of chief heat officer, a role that aims to reduce the impacts of extreme heat on health and economy. She works with various partners to implement the County's Extreme Heat Action Plan and other resilience initiatives.
