I've been using Qualcomm Atheros based miniPCIe modules in an PCEngines APU2 for years and the performance is actually slightly better than my trusted TP-Link Archer C7 v2 (which, ironically, uses a miniPCIe module for its 5GHz radio). So, I agree on the "avoid Intel" part of the answer, but not PCIe modules per se.
