The pilgrimage of Lourdes is founded on the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin to a poor, fourteen-year-old girl, Bernadette Soubiroux. The first apparition occurred 11 February, 1858. There were eighteen in all; the last took place 16 July, of the same year. Bernadette often fell into an ecstasy.
On March 2, 1858, Our Lady spoke to Bernadette, “Go, tell priests that the people are to come here in procession and to build a chapel.” Those who have visited Lourdes can easily recognize the images of the Rosary and the Eucharistic Processions that occur daily during the pilgrimage season.
Surrounded by 150 persons, Bernadette arrived at the Grotto. The Apparition reveals to her a secret “only for her alone”. Wednesday 24th february 1858: «Penance !» The message of the Lady: “Penance! Penance! Pray to God for sinners. Kiss the ground as an act of penance for sinners!” Three hundred people were present.
On 28th July 1858, the bishop of Lourdes launched a commission of enquiry into the supposed apparitions of the Virgin Mary at the Grotto of Massabielle: the task would last four years, culminating, on 18th January 1862, in a Decree which officially recognised the apparitions.
