Dec 1, 2005 · Nay-sayers: Normally, when taking a vote in an official setting, such as in Congress or in the Legislative Chambers, the answer is Yay for yes and Nay for no. Those who vote "no" are the nay-sayers. I would say that this isn´t a commonly used term in everyday speech. If I see it in any other context, other than in official terms, I understand it.

Aye and nay are quite old-fashioned versions of yes and no and are not much used in modern times - where you may hear them used is in certain regional accents, or particularly in rural areas. You will hear e.g. people in Yorkshire say "aye" instead of yes and it's still fairly common to say aye in Scotland.

How this should be understood depends entirely on context, but it could well mean "Stop talking about the man." On this model, "Stop talking about Susan," should be "Ix-nay on usan-say."
