Magnolia is my favorite PTA film by a mile. It's messy, but it's also outrageously ambitious. Watching it is one of the rare instances where you feel the filmmakers set out with the mindset that they would make The Greatest Movie of All Time, and the final result didn't end up as an Icarus story.
Aug 1, 2013 · Certainly Magnolia's furious attack on the tropes of personal revelation — that it is possible, and moreover therapeutic or redemptive — challenges a longstanding tenet of Hollywood storytelling. Given this attitude, we might expect Anderson to write un- (or anti-) sentimental films in the manner of Robert Altman, whose influence on Anderson is indeed apparent.

Jan 6, 2014 · If it helps, raining animals and other bizarre events was something Charles Fort wrote about quite a lot. The opening and closing narration is written in a similar fashion as Fort's writing and I believe he also has a mention in the credits (I rewatched Magnolia last night and his book appears in a scene also).

Aug 11, 2017 · Disclaimer: Magnolia is my favorite movie, so my opinion is somewhat biased. One criticism I frequently hear of Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia is that it falls apart towards the end. That the climactic rain of frogs is ridiculous and not in keeping with the rest of the film -- but I think the ending is part of what makes the movie work so well.
