The idea was conceived by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, to celebrate the accession of Sheikh Khalifa as President of the UAE in 2004. It is commemorated every year on the anniversary, November 3. It is not a public holiday.
The flag adopted to represent this alliance was a red-white-red horizontal triband with a seven pointed gold star. Between 1825 and 1952 Dubai, Kalba and Fujairah also joined the alliance. The United Arab Emirates was founded in 1971 when seven of the emirates of the previous Trucial States joined together to create a single independent country.
