Javert frequently refers to Jean Valjean as "Prisoner 24601", which never happens in the book. The number appears only twice in the novel, and is never spoken by Javert. It is only the first prison code of Valjean in the novel, but his only code in the musical.
Apr 4, 2017 · 24601 has developed into being an iconic part of both the Les Miserables book and musical. Was that number special to him, or was it simply a random number he chose (I doubt it)?
In the French, English, German, and Dutch musical versions, Valjean's initial prisoner number is 24601 (vignt-quatre six o un, two-four-six-oh-one, zwei-vier-sechs-null-eins or twee-vier-zes-nul-een) , true to the novel.
