Jun 12, 2024 · Built in 1876, the Lottie Cooper is a three-masted schooner that capsized and sank in gale force winds in 1894 just off the Sheboygan Harbor. She was one of an estimated 10,000 ships that have been lost on the Great Lakes, 700 of them on Lake Michigan and 62 of those just off Sheboygan.
Aug 10, 2014 · Lottie Cooper Shipwreck. In April of 1896 the three-masted schooner Lottie Cooper was wrecked just off Sheboygan, Wisconsin, in a roaring gale. The wreckage was found buried in Sheboygan Harbor during the construction of the Harbor Marina.

The Lottie Cooper and thousands of schooners like her were constructed of white oak which grew in great abundance in Wisconsin in the mid-19th century. These ships were built in the small shipyards that existed at the mouths of many rivers on the Great Lakes including the Sheboygan River.
